What is Anaerobic Digestion?

Anaerobic digestion is the process by which organic material is broken down by micro-organisms in the absence of oxygen to produce methane, carbon dioxide and water.

AD is not a new technology, it has been used in the UK since the late 1800s, but was discovered centuries before, with records showing that it was used in Assyria in 900BC to heat bathing water!

The process is commonly used in the treatment of wastewater, but over the last five years an increasing number of AD plants have been built in the UK to generate clean renewable energy, whilst simultaneously diverting waste from landfill and converting it into an excellent biofertiliser product.
