FAQs

Is it safe to use on farmland? Digestate is safe to use on farmland. All of our digestate is pasteurised and the quality of the product is audited against the PAS110 standard and the Quality Protocol as part of our Biofertiliser Certification Scheme accreditation.

What nutrients does digestate contain?
Generally, the digestate is high in nitrogen and potash but it also provides sulphur, magnesium, phosphate and other trace elements. See our ‘Digestate’ page for more details.

Is it possible to use too much digestate?

Digestate should only be spread in accordance with a nutrient management plan which will set out the amounts that should be spread per hectare, this will be determined by soil testing and crop requirements.

Can you spread digestate on all ground types?

Digestate liquor is suitable for use on grassland, arable and energy crops.

How long before we can graze the land after application?
Livestock should not be grazed, or forage crops cut within 21 days before grazing (or within two months for pigs)

Do I need a license to receive digestate?

The digestate that we spread is PAS110 certified, under the Biofertiliser Scheme, which means that no license is required.

What spreading method is used?

We use dribble bars or injection systems. See ‘Spreading Process’ section for more details.

Can I store my own digestate?

Yes. But storage lagoons should comply with all associated NRW and HSE guidelines – we can assist with this if required.

Could I make my own storage facility?

It is definitely an option but please contact us for specific advice on location and regulations etc.

Is digestate odourless?
There is an odour associated with the digestate, however where it is ploughed into the ground following application this odour will be minimal. When it is applied to an emerging crop there may be an odour for a few days after the application, but as with typical farm yard manure the weather conditions will determine how long the smell lasts.

I have an organic holding, can I use digestate?

No, in this circumstance you should not use digestate.
